Dunnville Secondary School’s Track and Field team competed in the year’s Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) competition. This group of athletes had to compete in last week’s Zone two competition, as well as place within the top five for their event to move on to SOSSA. This applied to all events except relay, where competitors had to place within the top two. On Thursday, May 19th, the Track and Field team with their coach, Kevin Boyd, traveled to Hamilton’s Bernie Arbour Stadium where SOSSA took place. Senior competitor Kyle Marr threw 34.95 meters in discus to place 5th and threw 12.8 meters in shot put to place 4th. The midget girls relay team members, Shannon Cowan, Taryn Kostelny, Ryleigh McMahon and Lauren Hines, placed 3rd in their event and finished in 56.65 seconds. Midget girl, Lauren Hines competed in long jump where she placed 1st for jumping 4.65 meters and also placed 1st in triple jump for jumping 10.32 meters. These athletes will be competing again in the Southern Regionals on Thursday, May 26 in St. Catharines at the Niagara Olympic Club. Coach Boyd stated, “I am very happy with the athletes and their attitude towards competing in their events. I hope that the regional experience will help the athletes to grow and develop.” Dunnville’s Track and Field team was small compared to other participating schools but was successful nonetheless. Coach Boyd commented, “I would like it if more students participated because I know they would enjoy the track and field atmosphere.”
