DSS Holds Annual May Arts Night

DSS Holds Annual May Arts Night
Dunnville
Shelby Ricker

Once a year in May, Dunnville Secondary School (D.S.S.) holds a concert that showcases its musical talent. This year’s May Arts Night was held on May 25, 2011 and began at seven p.m. The program was a variety concert with solos, duets, trios, quartets, chamber music, vocalists, and concert band. Students from all music classes, the noon hour concert band, and the guitar club were the participants. They brought out quite an audience for their show. Caitlinn Walker, who played flute at the concert said, “Even if you missed a couple notes the atmosphere was so friendly that it didn’t really matter. It was a learning experience for everyone.” This evening provides the first concert playing experience for many students of D.S.S. The guest artist of the night was Connor Dockrill. Dockrill played two selections on the piano from the composers Mozart, and Rachmaninoff. The whole evening was organized by the head of the music department Jeanne Spencer. Spencer said, “The best part of the evening was experiencing the benefits of the many hours of rehearsal time dedicated to this evening of music.” Spencer is also applying for a grant from the Carras Grant Foundation to help replace the many old instruments at D.S.S. The cost of repair for the out of date instruments has become overwhelming for the music department. Letters are being collected that are written by members of the community, as well as students to be sent to the Carras Grant Foundation with their words of support. If you would like to write a letter to help out, it can be dropped off at the main office of Dunnville Secondary School at 110 Helena St. Dunnville ON. Any help is greatly appreciated as it helps the students put on concerts like May Arts Night for the community.
