Dunnville Panthers are Ready to Take Charge!

By: Johnathan
Dunnville Secondary School’s first meeting of Panther’s Take Charge took place last Tuesday.  Panther’s Take Charge is a student-led health committee that is dedicated to improving health issues both locally and globally.
This year’s leader is Randy Koster who has been involved with Panther’s Take Charge in previous years.  The teacher supervisor for this group is Donna McMahon.  Another great asset to this team is Shelley Rollo, from the Dunnville Hospital Foundation.
The group meets every Tuesday at the beginning of lunch in the guidance seminar room (new members are always welcome!) and discusses various health issues and decides which ones to tackle, and how to tackle them.  In previous years Panther’s Take Charge has done events such as; ‘Toonies for Hunger,’ ‘Substance Abuse Prevention Week,’ ‘Five Days of Freedom,’ and many more!
Toonies for Hunger takes place during Halloween and involves students trick or treating for toonies or canned foods and all the proceeds go to a food bank or the School’s own Breakfast Club.  Substance Abuse Prevention Week takes place at the School and throughout the week there are different presentations and guest speakers that promote a harmful substance abuse free life.  Five Days of Freedom is a period of five days of awareness and fundraisers that help support poverty stricken countries.  All events are great causes to support!
Panther’s Take Charge has already created many improvements to Dunnville Secondary School,  such as making our school cafeteria a healthier place to eat, as well as the Breakfast Club program, which provides students with a great way to start their education day!  Who knows what they’ll accomplish next?
