University/College Prep Sessions at DSS

What do high school students want their future to look like? Last week speakers came to Dunnville Secondary School from a couple of universities including Ryerson and McMaster. A wide variety of speakers from different colleges and universities will continue to come to the school until the middle of December. They show the high school students what they have to offer and get them thinking about what they want for their future. They have a seminar and talk about what college/university life is like at each different school, what activities and courses they have, and what you need to get into the courses. This has been and will be getting students really questioning about what they would like for their future and to start thinking about the big decision of what career they would like to pursue. Students will come out of these seminars with a clearer view of their future plans for their careers.
The Caledonia Fair was never so intense in action. On September, Friday 30, the four high schools: Dunnville Secondary School, Cayuga Secondary School, McKinnon Park Secondary School and Hagersville Secondary School all competed to represent their school well. The team consisted of four senior boys and four senior girls, all led by guidance counsellor, Donna McMahon. All the events change every year, except for the "Boardwalk" which is an event where the team of four uses wooden "skis" and holds onto ropes to move them forward; it is an event to test teamwork in the team. High school Challenge is a very big event that bestows much pride on the schools. Donna McMahon does this every year because it is very closely aligned to student council, and it is a lot of fun. "I love to see secondary schools have fun and get excited; the school colors are all very exciting to see, and I enjoy it," said DSS guidance counsellor Donna McMahon.

First Dream Event a Huge Success

The Dunnville Secondary School cafeteria was in a heated debate on Friday, September 30th at . This was because Dream held its first raising awareness event: It’s all about power: Wind or no Wind.
Over 70 people showed up to see two speakers named Dr. Etcheverry and John Laforet debate on wind power, wind turbines, and renewable energy in general. The night started off with a speech from Shared Harvest Farm’s farm manager Kevin Hamilton about the farm and its C.S.A.’s, followed by a slideshow of the farm throughout the season, then the event reached the debate.
This debate was about the industrial wind turbines which are a growing concern in this year’s elections. Dr. Jose Etcheverry spoke about his beliefs in renewable energy, including wind energy, and his disbelief in oil and the current problems we as a society have environmentally. John Laforet doesn’t believe in renewable energy due to its need of an unrenewable energy source to back it up, and he thinks that wind turbines are unsafe and unhealthy. After the speakers presented their ideas, they were able to debate on the audience's questions.
Dr. Reza Kazemi held this event because it had to do with the future, and the future does not look great. He also wanted to make people more informed about global issues. This event was sponsored by Trillium Railway.

It’s been six years since the Dunnville Panther’s senior female basketball team won a game against Hagersville’s Hurricanes. Last Tuesday, September 27, at 3:30 P.M., both teams battled each other at Dunnville Secondary School to see whether Dunnville’s losing streak would be broken. After a tight first three quarters, the game was tied 17-17, but Dunnville was not ready to lose to or tie Hagersville. In the fourth quarter, Dunnville tightened up its defense and pushed hard to score a few extra points. This ended in success when they scored 27 points for Hagersville’s three, thus letting Dunnville end the game with a massive 44-20 lead. Paige Williams, a forward on Dunnville’s team, said that, “By the third period we really came together and started to play as a team, but in the first and second quarters, I had no idea what to expect.” With this win under their belt and more practices before their next game on Thursday, October 6th, Dunnville’s Panthers are looking forward to an exciting season.
