Students Help Students at DSS

At Dunnville Secondary School (DSS) a new after school program has started in recent years for students who need help with their schoolwork or have a lot of schoolwork and are behind. It is called Fifth Period. It happens between 3:15 and 4:30 every Tuesday and Thursday. It is for grades 9 and 10 and is run by Jessica MacLeod, a teacher at DSS. There are usually between 8 and 10 students who attend, but new students are always welcome.
The people who help the students are teachers from DSS and older students who volunteer. The volunteers are mainly from Andrew Preston’s grade 12 Advanced Functions class (a.k.a., “The Brains of the School,” as called by Mrs. McMahon, a guidance councilor at DSS).
“I think it’s a good idea for students who need a little encouragement or help, especially at this busy time of year,” said Jennifer Pogson, a grade 12 student at DSS and a volunteer for the Fifth Period.
So, if you are falling behind, or need help with your schoolwork, then come to Fifth Quarter; or if you are in Grade 12 and would like to help younger students, then stop by. You can come either both days, or just one day a week, and you do not have to come every week if you don’t have time; it is strictly on a volunteer basis.
