Mitchell Patterson
What are your prime directives? “Serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the
law.” That’s what Robocop will say, when he is fully painted on the walls on Dunnville Secondary School (DSS), done by talented artist Mitchell Patterson. Patterson went into his final year
of high school determined to leave his mark. “Since grade nine I wanted to paint a mural on the wall. I
had so many ideas for it since then, who would have guessed that it would be Robocop,” said Patterson.
But that wasn’t Patterson’s first idea of his greatest art project. Back in mid September, Patterson wanted to paint a
whole horror movie montage, with all of the famous horror characters, but it was too graphic for the
school setting. “I wanted to do something that interested me, and would be creative. I remember I
watched the Robocop movie in grade eleven, and I loved it. After, I looked at pictures of the movie on
the internet, and I saw a poster for Robocop 2, which had Robocop busting through a wall. I thought to
myself, wouldn’t this be really neat if this were a mural.” If you have been in DSS for the past 7 months,
you can obviously tell that Patterson went with a wall length mural of OCP’s Law Enforcement super
cyborg. Since Patterson didn’t have an Art class in his final year, he had to do it during his spare. Though
when the wall primer and sketch of the mural was up, Patterson lost interest in the project. “I was more
focused on my school work than the mural; I wanted to get good grades this year, but I didn’t abandon
my art project.” It’s been nearly six months, and Patterson hasn’t touched the wall where Robocop
stands. After all the motivation from his fellow students, and teachers, he got back on his feet and
started bringing the color to Robocop. “Hopefully, I will finish before the end of the school year,
because my graduating class wants to see it finished, but mostly I want to see it done,”
Patterson stated, with determination.
